Mark Lawson talks to James Lovelock

May

on BBC4 10pm

Mark Lawson talks to James Lovelock, the renowned 86 year-old scientist about his radical views on how planet Earth functions and the stark challenge of human-induced climate change.

The programme explores the development of Lovelock’s career from medical researcher to independent scientist and how he came to formulate his theory of ‘Gaia’:  a living, self-regulating Earth.

Lovelock’s current prognosis on the state of the global environment is outlined in his book Revenge of Gaia.  He warns that the accelerating warming of the Earth's climate change is the biggest threat to humanity and civilization and that we stand on the edge of catastrophic change if we continue with current levels of energy consumption and economic growth. He warns that millions may die from starvation due to drought and as cities are engulfed by rising sea levels.
